ICD-10 Transition Presentation: What Health Lawyers Need to Know

The compliance deadline for the implementation of the ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS code set will be extended once again.  The Senate voted March 31, 2014, to approve a bill that includes a section stating the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) cannot adopt ICD-10 code as the standard until at least October 1, 2015.

A recent ICD-10 industry readiness survey conducted by the Workgroup for Electronic Data Interchange (WEDI) had indicated that while all industry segments had made some progress, they had not gained sufficient ground to remove concern over meeting the previous October 1, 2014, compliance deadline.  Given WEDI’s findings, the bill’s passage may give the industry another year of preparation.

PYA Consulting Principal Denise Hall, along with co-presenter Julie Chicoine, recently updated health lawyers about ICD-10 transition readiness at the American Health Lawyers Association Institute on Medicare and Medicaid Payment Issues, held March 26-27, 2014.  The presentation outlined the following:

  • What is ICD‐10, and why is it important to the healthcare community?
  • What is the current regulatory status of ICD‐10?
  • Organizational impact – Operational and Financial
  • Readiness and implementation strategies

View the presentation below.  NOTE: This presentation was given just days prior to the Senate voting on a bill which provides for the extension of the ICD-10 deadline.  New information and deadlines resulting from that vote are not reflected in this presentation, but would supersede presentation content in some instances!
